Smith denies star bid

Walter Smith says he has not had one offer for Carlos Cuellar and insists the player is staying with Rangers.

The Gers ace has been strongly linked with Newcastle and speculation over his future has reached fever pitch following the shock defeat to FBK Kaunas in the Champions League qualifier.

However, Smith says he has not had one offer for the player this summer and hopes that remains the case.

"We've not had an offer for Carlos Cuellar," Smith revealed. "We don't want one and we are not seeking one. We don't have to sell the player or any player at this stage. We don't have to offload players simply because of that situation.

"Some players were going to leave anyway and that will still happen. But it's not entirely because of our failure to qualify for the Champions League."
