Smith set for Cuellar cash

RangersAston Villa are set to complete the signing of Carlos Cuellar after agreeing a fee of £7.8million with Rangers.

The defender is currently undergoing a medical at Villa Park and is expected to become Villa boss Martin O'Neill's sixth signing of the summer in the next 24 hours.

The news comes as a blow to Gers boss Walter Smith but he insists he will be able to use the money raised to strengthen his squad with new players.

"This has come as a surprise and I am disappointed," Smith told the club's official website. "Carlos Cuellar has been a great player for the football club and inevitably there has been speculation about him playing in the Premiership.

"The club has received a substantial uplift in fee and we will now reinvest in the team."
