Full-back to lead Royals clear-out

Director of football Nicky Hammond has confirmed changes will be made at relegated Reading and Nicky Shorey is set to lead the exodus.

Hammond has spoken out after the Royals dropped back into the Championship on Sunday, despite winning 4-0 at Derby, as Fulham survived courtesy of a 1-0 win at Portsmouth.

There were suggestions that several players could be on the way out of the Madejski Stadium even if the Royals survived in the Premier League, but relegation means around 10 of the current squad look like departing.

Hammond told the Evening Post: "There will probably be more change and reflection than in the past few years.

"Clubs go in cycles. Sometimes there needs to be change and sometimes there doesn't, but maybe we have got to that stage where we do need to make changes."

England international left-back Shorey, who was the subject of a £4million bid from West Ham last summer, is certain to leave as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Sunderland are likely to renew their interest in Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Hunt after having several bids turned down for him last August. Indeed Black Cats boss Roy Keane is thought to keen on taking Hunt and striker Kevin Doyle in a double raid on the Royals.

Striker Leroy Lita only has a year left on his contract and is certain to go, along with last season's £2.5million midfield signing from Nancy Emerson Fae, who has just completed a 14-day ban and been fined two weeks wages for refusing to play in the reserves.

Out-of-contract players Ulises de la Cruz, John Halls, John Oster, Sam Sodje and Graham Stack are also all expected to be released.
