Keeper steps up return

Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is back in training and it is hoped he will soon be back knocking on the first-team door.

McCarthy has been on the sidelines since badly damaging his shoulder in November but he has taken a significant step on the road to recovery after returning to non-contact training.

The Royals are refusing to rush the goalkeeper for fear of him suffering a setback but the fact he is back on the training pitch with Adam Federici, Stuart Taylor and Mikkel Andersen is a huge boost.

McCarthy has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea over the last couple of days and it is hoped he will be back in the Royals side before the season is out.
