Gus Poyet will decide in the next 24 hours whether to swap Brighton for Reading and is said to have reservations over taking the job.
Poyet is Reading's number one choice to replace the sacked Brian McDermott and after Brighton gave them permission to speak to the Uruguayan a quick deal looked to be on the cards.
However Poyet is reluctant to walk away from Brighton, who are a club on the up and could replace the Royals in the Premier League next season as they sit just outside of the Championship play-offs.
Taking over at a club that could be relegated within weeks of taking charge is also a concern for Poyet, who may decide to stay and continue his push for the top flight with the Seagulls.
However Royals owner Anton Zingerevich is still hoping to persuade him to jump ship and will promise him a large transfer budget next season no matter what division they are in.
There have also been suggestions Poyet may be angling for a return to Chelsea if as expected Rafael Benitez leaves Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
