Reds target defender swoop

Liverpool are reported to be keeping tabs on Reading defender Alex Pearce, who has yet to agree a new deal with the club.

Pearce was named Player of the Year for the Royals as they won promotion to the Premier League last season but has struggled for action in this campaign as Sean Morrison has taken his place in central defence.

The 24-year-old is also due to fall out of contract in the summer and although Reading have offered him a new four-year contract, there is no sign of him putting pen-to-paper.

That could open the door for Liverpool to swoop in January. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers knows all about Pearce following his time in charge of the Royals academy and reports claim he wants to take the defender to Anfield.

Pearce is now starting to force his way into the Republic of Ireland set up and although Brian McDermott wants to keep hold he may struggle if Liverpool come knocking.
