Striker would have stayed

Wolves' new signing Kevin Doyle has revealed he would have stayed at Reading if his transfer valuation had not been met.

Wolves offered the £6.5m fee needed to release the Republic of Ireland striker from his contract with the Royals and he joined them earlier in the week but had no one come up with the money he says he would have stayed with Reading in the Championship.

Doyle said: "It's sad to leave. I had the best four years of my life here.

"At the same time if nobody had wanted to meet the fee then I would have stayed and been happy to stay here as it's an exciting time for the club with the new manager (Brendan Rodgers).

"There was an agreement with the club at the end of last season that if we didn't go up and someone did come in for me then I could move on.

"There were quite a few clubs interested, but Wolves were the first to show an interest. And going to the training ground the other week I just got the feeling it was the right place to go."
