Meyer lands Tigers post

R UnionLeicester Tigers have unveiled South African Heyneke Meyer as their new coach, who comes in to replace the sacked Marcelo Loffreda.

The Argentine was shown the exit door after just one season at Welford Road and he paid the price for a trophy-less season for the east Midlands outfit.

A number of names were linked with the vacancy at the Premiership giants but it is the 40-year-old former Bulls tactician that has beaten of the competition to secure the post.

Meyer led the Bulls to the 2007 Super 14 title and is widely regarded as the best South African coach around and Tigers chairman Peter Tom believes they have chosen the best man from an outstanding list of applicants.

"We believe Heyneke is the outstanding candidate for a job which attracted a massive amount of interest from coaches all over the rugby world," he told the club's official website.

"He has a superb record in South Africa and we were very impressed by his levels of professionalism, preparation and enthusiasm when he spoke to us."

And Tom feels the new coach will bring a new dimension to the club after working with the cream of the crop in South Africa.

"Heyneke has dealt with top-quality international players in his time with the Bulls and in working with the South Africa national squad," he added.

"He has also developed players from within the ranks at his previous clubs and he has an impressive record of success in a very competitive environment."
