Paterson prefers Magners League

R UnionEdinburgh's Chris Paterson says the type of rugby in the Magners League is more open and attractive than in England's Premiership.

After spending a season with Gloucester, Paterson returned north of the border when joining Magners League outfit Edinburgh and he is looking forward to the new season saying it is a brand that suits his game far better.

"The Magners League is more positive, more attacking and, as a spectator, certainly better to watch," he said. "I genuinely think the Magners League is better, for my game and the game Edinburgh play."

Paterson started just six times for Gloucester while making a further 11 appearances from the bench but is hoping to be involved from the start as Edinburgh kick off the new season on September 5 with a game against European champions Munster.

Paterson believes it will be entertaining from the off and is looking forward to the opener after finding club rugby in England too 'negative'.

"The Premiership is physically dominated, there are a lot of slower games and relegation sometimes strangles the spectacle," Paterson added. "You get two or three great games at the top end of the league undoubtedly, but towards the bottom there are tough, tough games.

"The threat of relegation and the amount of money you could lose in relegation sometimes strangles it."
