Sale win marred by Thomas injury

R UnionSale centre Lee Thomas could be out for six weeks after picking up a shoulder injury in his side's 32-15 win at Clermont Auvergne.

Thomas might need surgery on his shoulder after sustaining the problem in the Heineken Cup Pool 2 victory against the French championship runners-up.

It was a bitter-sweet night for Sale boss Philippe Saint Andre as the fine victory was tempered by Thomas' injury, while scrum-half Dwayne Peel also picked up a knock and is a doubt for next Sunday's big clash against Munster.

"Lee Thomas has damaged his shoulder and he could need surgery but Peel could recover in time to play against Munster if we are lucky," said Saint Andre afterwards.

The coach was delighted with the victory, however, and described it as the best performance from his team since they won the Premiership three years ago.

"When we had the ball we tried to attack and be adventurous and I'm very proud of my team after seeing them put on their best performance in Europe and the best I've seen since we won the Premiership final," he added.

"Now, we have to prove we can put two big performances back to back by beating Munster. If we win here and lose at home to Munster, the hard work we did here will count for very little."
