Burnley appear to be in another fight with north-west rivals Wigan this time for the services of Sheffield United's Mathew Kilgallon.
The 25-year-old former Leeds centre-half was voted the Blades' player of the season last time around but talks over a new deal have stalled at Bramall Lane and now Burnley boss Owen Coyle may be ready to step in.
Sheffield United would be reluctant to let Kilgallon go so the offer would have to be a substantial one for a defender who cost them £1.75m when they signed him in January 2007.
Kilgallon would be tempted by a return to Premiership football and he is rated highly by both Coyle and new Wigan boss Roberto Martinez.
