Sheffield United have emerged as the club who have tabled a £1.8m bid for Watford forward Tommy Smith.

The Hornets have been keen to keep a hold of last season's player of the year, with boss Malky MacKay describing Smith as one of the top three players in the division.

But the offer has proved too good to turn down and the 29-year-old could be heading out of the exit door at Vicarage Road if talks with the Blades conclude successfully.

Former Watford boss Brendan Rodgers recently failed with a bid for the former Derby man, although Reading now have more funds at their disposal following the sale of Kevin Doyle to Wolves.

But Bramall Lane chief Kevin Blackwell has stolen a march on the Royals as he closes on his man.
