Smith determined to shine

Sheff WedNew signing Jimmy Smith is determined to show Chelsea what they have let go when he gets his Sheffield Wednesday career up and running.

The midfielder has put pen to paper on a temporary deal that runs until January 2009 - but the Owls will then have the option to extend his stay until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old, who has enjoyed loan spells with QPR and Norwich, is looking forward to getting some valuable game time under his belt and is hoping to impress manager Brian Laws.

He told the official club website: "I'm here until January but if I'm in a position to stay longer, that means I'll be doing well for Sheffield Wednesday and that's what I'm aiming for.

"I'm honoured to be here and I'm focussed on impressing the manager and the fans here.

"I have plenty of Championship games under the belt and that can only be a good thing when you come to a big club like Sheffield Wednesday."
