Crewe eased through to the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after a slick display secured a 2-1 win at Shrewsbury.

Crewe's early enterprise was rewarded with a ninth-minute lead. Goalkeeper Joe Anyon pushed out a Mathias Pogba drive but skipper Luke Murphy was on hand to turn the loose ball high into the net.

Chris Weale, on for the injured Anyon, then did superbly to tip a delightful chip from the classy Murphy onto the bar. Shrewsbury made little impression going forward although Darren Jones smashed a close-range effort over the bar after Marvin Morgan nodded down a corner.

Crewe picked up where they left off after the break and Max Clayton, set up by Pogba, fired in a second in the 57th minute.

Shrewsbury only perked up when Asa Hall was sent on as a substitute just shy of the hour and the midfielder quickly pulled one back with Graham Turner's side's first goal in 338 minutes, a 25-yard drive which squirmed past red-faced goalkeeper Alan Martin.

But Martin then made amends by stopping efforts from Hall and Jon Taylor as Shrewsbury failed to find an equaliser.
