Blow for Shrews as Fyvie heads home

Last Updated: Mon, 24 Feb 2014 16:03

Shrewsbury's on-loan midfielder Fraser Fyvie has returned to parent club Wigan.

Fyvie sustained a knee injury in training on Thursday and duly missed Saturday's important 3-2 victory at Notts County, scheduled to be the final match of his initial month-long stay in Shropshire.

And caretaker boss Mike Jackson has opted not to take any risks with a loan extension for the 20-year-old.

"He will have to go back." Jackson told Town's official website.

"He had a fresh air shot on Thursday, went home, got up the next morning and he could hardly bend his knee.

"So obviously we can't commit to taking a loan player for another month if we don't know if he is going to be fit, especially financially."

Fyvie's return to the DW Stadium has left Shrews light in midfield with Luke Summerfield and Aaron Wildig currently sidelined due to thigh injuries.

And Jackson will now evaluate his options in the loan market before deciding whether to bring in fresh blood for the club's battle against relegation from League One.

"It has left us a bit short and that is something we will be looking at now in the next couple of days. Do we need to strengthen in a couple of areas as well?" he added.

"They have got to be the right ones. We have got (regular right-back) Ryan Woods who can play in the middle of the park but that means we would need a right-back really, so there's options we have got to look at.

"We might need to do it but if someone comes in it has got to be someone who is better than what we've got or at least (someone capable of) challenging (them)"

Fyvie made a total of four league starts during his time at the Greenhous Meadow.
