Benitez eyes Saints' target

Napoli boss Rafael Benitez is poised to snap up reported Southampton target Davide Astori from their Italian Serie A rivals Cagliari.

The Saints have been heavily linked with a swoop for the 27-year-old Italy international defender but they have not managed to get a deal concluded following 12 months' of speculation.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino had been linked with a move for Astori and it was thought he would step that up when Dejan Lovren picked up an ankle injury at Sunderland on Saturday.

But reports in Italy claim former Liverpool and Chelsea chief, Benitez, has now identified Astori as the man he wants to bolster his defensive options before the January window closes at the end of the month.

If the Spanish tactician firms up his efforts to sign him then Astori would reportedly prefer to remain in Italy and that would see the Saints being forced to look elsewhere.
