Hammers to beat Whites in Saints race

West Ham have leapt to the front of the queue in the race to land Southampton keeper Kelvin Davis who had been linked to Leeds.

The West Yorkshire side had hoped to land the 32-year-old but Gianfranco Zola's interest is likely to scupper that deal.

Zola is looking for a number two keeper to back-up first choice Robert Green if, as expected, Jan Lastuvka returns to Shakhtar Donetsk following a year-long loan.

That would leave the Hammers short in that department and the chances of being a number two in the Premiership would probably be enough to persuade Davis a move to East London is where his future lies.
