Poortvliet pounces for Cork

SotonSouthampton head coach Jan Poortvliet has strengthened his defence by signing Chelsea youngster Jack Cork on loan until January.

Sheffield Wednesday and Aberdeen had expressed an interest in the 19-year-old, but Poortvliet has moved to cover for the loss of centre-half Andrew Davies to Stoke earlier this week by recruiting the talented youngster.

Cork, son of former Wimbledon striker Allan, can play anywhere across the back four and also played as a holding midfielder in previous loan spells with Bournemouth and Scunthorpe.

He will go straight into Saints' squad for the trip to Derby on Saturday.
