Southampton are reportedly keen on signing AC Milan's former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, but face competition from Aston Villa.
Flamini is a free agent at the end of the season and is believed to be weighing up his options after struggling to play regularly for Milan since his move from Arsenal in 2008.
Injuries have disrupted his spell at the San Siro and he has now been linked with a return to the Premier League with both Southampton and Villa said to be interested in the 29-year-old.
The Frenchman made over 150 appearances for the Gunners during a four-year spell before heading out to Italy and he would bring considerable experience to St Mary's, should boss Mauricio Pochettino land him on a free transfer.
Villa are rivalling Saints for his signature but Flamini would be against joining them if Paul Lambert's side get relegated, so Saints, who themselves appear to now be safe from the drop, are favourites to sign him should the midfielder opt for a move back to England.
