Southampton's club-record signing Dani Osvaldo is being assessed ahead of a possible New Year's Day return against Chelsea.

The Italian international suffered a knock in the 1-1 draw at Newcastle before Christmas and, having recovered from that, he was then struck down by illness.

Morgan Schneiderlin returns from suspension while Nathaniel Clyne will be hoping to start as he steps up his return from a hamstring complaint.

Calum Chambers will be the one to drop out if the England Under-21 international is able to start.

Artur Boruc (hand), Victor Wanyama (shin) and Guly do Prado (knee) remain on the sidelines.
