Saints join Norwegian ace race

Southampton are reportedly joining the chase to sign Molde's £4million-rated Norwegian international defender Vegard Forren.

The 24-year-old centre-half had been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Fulham during this January transfer window but their boss Martin Jol ruled out a swoop, while Manchester United have not followed up their apparent interest.

That led to Liverpool stepping in with boss Brendan Rodgers poised to offer Forren a chance to play Premier League football at Anfield amid reports of a £4million bid being accepted by Molde.

But fresh reports now claim that Saints boss Nigel Adkins will try and hijack Liverpool's move by equalling the money on offer from the Merseysiders.

Adkins has been keen on taking Cagliari's Italian international central defender Davide Astori to St Mary's, but with the Serie A side wanting around £10million for his signature, Forren would represent a cheaper alternative.
