Southampton are monitoring Brad Friedel's situation at Spurs as Nigel Adkins remains unconvinced by any of his three senior keepers.
Adkins gave 20-year-old Argentine Paolo Gazzaniga the shirt for his sixth start of the season on Saturday as Saints' recorded a much-needed 3-1 away win at QPR, but they again failed to keep a clean sheet.
And, having already used veteran Kelvin Davies and controversial Artur Boruc earlier this season, Adkins is on the lookout for an experienced proven keeper who he can depend on every week.
Friedel fits the bill perfectly and even at 41 remains as fit as any other keeper in the Premier League - having played 310 consecutive games for his clubs until he was left out in favour of new Spurs rival Hugo Lloris last month.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas made a bigger call when he dropped Friedel and gave Lloris another start in the north London derby on Saturday - a decision which will not have gone down well with the US veteran.
The Tottenham manager may decide to let Friedel go if it clears up the selection controversy and his Saints counterpart is likely to be at the head of the queue to pick him up if that happens in January.
