Southampton have failed in their bid to sign Doncaster captain Brian Stock after the two clubs fcouldn't agree a price.

Saints boss Alan Pardew said the two clubs failed to agree a deal for the 28-year-old, who was born in Winchester and is believed to be looking for a move back to the south coast.

Stock returned to the Doncaster side in Rovers' 2-1 victory at home to Watford after recovering form ankle surgery in September.

After the match, Doncaster's assistant manager Richard O'Kelly praised Stock's performance and said it was imperative the club kept players of his calibre.

"Brian is one of those players who has got a football brain and he could still be playing at 40. He's a clever footballer who knows what he is doing and he's got the confidence in his own ability."
