Southampton are thought to have stolen a march on Liverpool in the race for Lyon defender Dejan Lovren by making a bid of £8.5million.
The Croatia international is set to be sacrificed by the French club this summer as they look to plug a €25million gap in their accounts.
Lyon are loathed to sell star midfield duo Maxime Gonalons and Clement Grenier and as such Lovren is reportedly up for grabs, with Saints, Liverpool and AC Milan registering their interest.
Southampton are keen to steal a march on their rivals for the 23-year-old's signature and have offered in the region of £8.5million for the defender.
However, Lyon look set to hold out for closer to £10million for Lovren, who has previously admitted he would be tempted by the prospect of a new challenge this summer.
