Southampton are understood to have agreed a fee with Molde for defender Vegard Forren, who has withdrawn from a trial with Liverpool.

The Norwegian ace was due to head to Melwood training ground in an attempt to impress Brendan Rodgers, with a view to earning himself a permanent move to Anfield.

But Saints have stepped in and stolen a march by agreeing a fee with his current club and the 24-year-old now seems to be heading to St Mary's, if he can thrash out personal terms.

Southampton hope they can finalise the details on the move for Forren, who has made five appearances for his country, ahead of their clash at Chelsea on Wednesday.

Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted to Norwegian newspaper Romsdals Budstikke: "There have been many inquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer.

"Molde is close to a deal, so we'll see if this is something that all parties will go with."
