Stopper issues Saints deal pledge

Jose Fonte has confirmed that he wants to stay with Southampton and sign a new deal despite the summer exodus of players.

The 30-year-old Portuguese central defender had been linked with a move away from St Mary's at the end of last season with both Hull City and relegated Cardiff thought to be interested in signing him.

However, despite boss Mauricio Pochettino, fellow central defender Dejan Lovren, full-back duo Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers, midfielder Adam Lallana and striker Rickie Lambert all departing since, Fonte is still happy at St Mary's under new boss Ronald Koeman.

Fonte, whose current deal will expire next summer, said: "I am in negotiations to renew my contract. There have been offers from other clubs, but I feel happy at Southampton.

"I'm not surprised about the offers that arrived, but a bit disappointed and sad that so many players left.

"It wasn't the situation that the fans wanted, but that's football."
