Stern John may resurrect his career with Southampton in League One after returning to training and expressing a desire for a new deal.

The Trinidad & Tobago international hitman is now a free agent after coming to the end of his Saints contract on Wednesday and failing to secure a deal with Bristol City, where he spent the second half of last season on loan.

And Saints coach Mark Wotte has admitted that John could now stay on at St Mary's after linking up with the first-team squad in pre-season training at Staplewood.

Wotte told the Daily Echo: "Stern John is training and I had a chat with him. He seems really keen on trying to stay at Southampton.

"He has to become fit because he didn't do a lot in the summer so he has to be fitter. If he's fit then I think he can have some friendly games to prove himself."
