Tamika Mkandawire has extended his loan deal at Southend by a further month.

The Millwall player's current deal was due to expire after the Blues' Johnstone's Paint Trophy match with Brentford next month but the midfielder, 29, will now remain at Roots Hall until January 1, much to the delight of Shrimpers' boss Paul Sturrock.

"Tam has been a real unsung hero of our recent success," Sturrock told the official website. "I'm glad to have him here for the important Christmas fixtures."

Mkandawire has made four appearances since his arrival from the Den.
