Southend have moved quickly to appoint former Bolton, Derby, Hull City, and Preston boss Phil Brown as successor to Paul Sturrock.
The Shrimpers dismissed Sturrock on Sunday after the promotion hopefuls only managed to take five points from the last available 18.
Brown made history when he managed Hull City, by leading them to the top division for the first time after they beat Bristol City 1-0 in a tense championship play off final in 2008.
The 53-year-old has been unemployed since he was sacked by Preston North End in December 2011, but will relish the opportunity to try and gain promotion with Southend, who lie only two places outside the League Two play-off places, with seven games remaining.
