Gus makes no excuses

Gus McPherson refused to blame the state of the less-than-impressive Fir Park pitch for St Mirren's 2-0 defeat at Motherwell.

The Buddies remain in eighth in the SPL after falling to goals from Jamie Murphy and former St Mirren frontman John Sutton, but it was the pitch that lead to plenty of talk after the game.

The playing surface was heavily sanded and cut up as the game progressed, making it difficult to get the ball down and play decent passing football, but McPherson refused to use it as an excuse.

He told the Paisley Express: "It's the same for both teams and if you criticise the pitch, then it just sounds like excuses.

"If that's what we are playing top-flight football on, then it's a case of just going from back to front and trying not to make mistakes.

"To be fair, Motherwell did that better than us in the first half, as we had to defend."
