Hughes misses Barca star

Mark Hughes says he was in the hunt to sign Barcelona starlet Gerard Deulofeu but Everton won the race for his signature.

Deulofeu was the star of the show as Everton hammered the Potters 4-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday but Hughes says had things been different the talented youngster could have been in Stoke colours.

As it is Everton won the day and Hughes was left to ponder what might have been.

"We were aware of him and knew he was a talent," Hughes revealed. "We made an inquiry ourselves. We brought in Marc Muniesa and were aware he was up for a loan deal as well, but unfortunately he came here (to Everton) and not to Stoke.

"He's a very talented boy and I'm sure he will only be a loan deal and Barcelona will keep hold of that asset."
