Wigan are targeting a permanent deal for Stoke defender Ryan Shotton in January and are ready to pay £2million.
Shotton joined Wigan on loan after a deal was pushed through just before Monday night's 11pm deadline but it has now been revealed that the Championship club wanted him on a permanent basis.
A deal was in place but Wigan ran out of time to push through a permanent deal as they waited for James McCarthy to join Everton, so it ended up being an initial loan deal.
However Wigan will look to sign Shotton when the transfer window re-opens in January, while there have been suggestions that Crystal Palace could also make a move.
Shotton has slipped down the pecking order at Stoke and was loaned out along with Cameron Jerome and Michael Kightly, who joined Palace and Burnley respectively.
