Potters check on Danish defender

Stoke City are showing interest in NEC Nijmegen left-back Kevin Conboy after an aborted mission to watch Hannover's Mame Diouf.

The 26-year-old defender, who was sent off three times last season, was under scrutiny as his NEC side drew 1-1 at Heracles in the Dutch top flight.

Conboy is a hard-tackling Denmark international who was signed from Esbjerg in 2011 and is the most red-carded player in the Eredivisie in the last two seasons.

He also scored two goals last season, including a stunning free-kick into the top corner against AZ back in April.

There were rumours that a couple of leading Championship clubs were chasing his services in the summer, but Stoke are now sniffing around - only months after signing Netherlands international left-back Eric Pieters.

Stoke's European scout watched Conboy on Sunday, 24 hours after a wasted trip to Dortmund for Borussia's Bundesliga match against Hannover where striker target Diouf was to be monitored.

The 25-year-old ex-Manchester United striker was tipped to return from a thigh strain against Dortmund, but was not included in the match-day squad.
