Stoke have missed out on Sweden international defender Martin Olsson who has signed for Norwich City.
The 25-year-old, who can also operate on the left side of midfield, will move to Carrow Road on a four-year deal from Championship club Blackburn for an undisclosed fee.
Potters boss Mark Hughes was thought to be in the hunt for the player he managed at Ewood Park but it is the Canaries that have won the race for his signature.
The capture of Erik Pieters may have changed Hughes' mind, but the fact Olsson can play anywhere down the left would have made him an attractive proposition.
Meanwhile, the Canaries have also snapped up former Potters goalkeeper Carlo Nash following his release from the Britannia Stadium at the end of the season.
