Mark Hughes says he tried to sign Darren Bent in the summer only to be told the striker was not interested in a move to Stoke.
Bent was told he could leave Aston Villa and Hughes was keen to strike a deal as he looked to bolster his strike force.
However for one reason or another Bent did not fancy a move to the Potters and ended up signing for Fulham.
Hughes got a first-hand glimpse of what he missed out on as Bent grabbed the only goal in Fulham's 1-0 win at the weekend, however the City boss says his side will bounce back.
"We looked at Darren but we were told he wouldn't come to Stoke - or his agent wouldn't - so that was that," Hughes revealed. "We don't know why, but we didn't get a chance.
"If a player like Darren Bent gets an opportunity, more often than not he takes it. The galling thing is that was the only chance Fulham created and they were able to take maximum points.
"But we are going to get better and there are other games coming up that we can take points from."
