Stoke are working on a deal to sign USA international striker Juan Agudelo after missing out on Benfica's Nelson Oliveira.
The Potters boss is keen to bolster his forward line ahead of the new campaign and will turn his attentions to the American hot shot after Oliveira opted for a move to France over the Britannia Stadium.
The 20-year-old Columbian-born star has been on Hughes' radar for some time after he first showed an interest in the player when he was manager of Manchester City.
Hughes has kept tabs on his progress ever since and is now hoping to bring the New England Revolution star to England well before the transfer window closes on September 2.
Stoke officials have been holding talks with their New England counterparts while on their pre-season tour of the USA and hope they have done enough to secure a deal amid interest from a Premier League rival.
