Stoke left-back Danny Higginbotham could miss the home clash with Newcastle on Saturday because of a back injury.

The former Manchester United youngster twisted and strained his back in the win at West Brom last weekend and has been undergoing treatment in a bid to be ready for the visit of the struggling Magpies.

Potters chief Tony Pulis will have to make a late call but does not want to go into the game without Higginbotham if possible.

He said: "Danny has done terrifically well at left-back for us all season and is obviously desperate to get out there against Newcastle because he knows just how big the game is."
