Stoke boss Tony Pulis plans to hold talks with Dean Whitehead over a new deal but admits Matthew Upson will move on.

Whitehead is due to fall out of contract at the end of the season and would be available on a free transfer but Pulis is keen to get him tied down to a new contract.

The 31-year-old has spent the last four seasons at the club and Pulis says talks to extend that stay will begin as the season progresses.

"He is one of those that the closer we get to the end of the season, we will hopefully discuss things," he said.

However, one player who is definitely heading for the exit door is Upson, who has joined Brighton on loan and is hoping to do enough to earn a permanent deal with them.

"Matty is at Brighton to get himself a contract," Pulis added. "He hasn't played as much for us as he would have wanted, but he has been brilliant for us."
