Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross is setting his sights on a regular place in the England squad ahead of his expected debut on Wednesday.

The centre-back has been summoned by Roy Hodgson for the last three internationals, without actually playing a single minute of football.

However, that is set to change in this week's friendly against Sweden with the City stopper being tipped for his first cap in the clash in Stockholm.

Shawcross claims he is now starting to feel more comfortable with the experience of international duty, and can't wait for the chance to prove his worth on the field.

The Chester-born product, who started his career at Manchester United, has become a dependable figure in the City rearguard over the last few seasons and has spurred several advances in the past from Wales to switch allegiances.

He told FATV: "On a personal level, if I'm doing okay and being consistent, I always felt that I had enough to hopefully break into the England squad.

"And, luckily enough, I have done, so I want to stay in it.

"It's always good to come away with the national team and now I've been a few times I'm starting to feel at home. Hopefully we can get a positive result out in Sweden and that's the main point of this week, really.

"When I was a schoolboy, I played for Wales because I went to school [there] but when I turned 16, there was a rule that said I couldn't play for Wales.

I've always wanted to play for England and I spoke to Chris Coleman, and Gary Speed before that, and made it clear that I wanted to play for England, so there was never really any choice."
