Stoke have offered PSV Eindhoven £3million for defender Erik Pieters but could turn to Juventus' Paolo De Ceglie if that is rejected.
New Potters boss Mark Hughes is keen to change the style of play the Britannia Stadium faithful have become accustomed to and is targeting the signing of attacking full-backs.
Netherlands international Pieters has thrived as a left-back who can get forward and was set to be first choice for Oranje at last summer's Euro 2012 before injury curtailed his participation.
While the 24-year-old has impressed for PSV in that role for the majority of his five years at the club, he managed only a handful of Eredivisie appearances last season due to injury.
Pieters is also known to have an unpredictable temperament and PSV have reportedly had enough of his antics, the final straw coming when he was sent off last season and punched a window, injuring his hand as a result.
Stoke are thought to have offered £3million in the hope the Dutch giants will part with Pieters but Hughes is also thought to be considering a move for Juventus full-back De Ceglie if a deal cannot be agreed.
