Mark Hughes says Stoke have missed out on the signing of Benfica striker Nelson Oliveira, who has gone to Rennes for more money.
The Potters were close to landing the highly-rated forward on a season-long loan deal but Hughes says Rennes came in at the death and offered more money.
Whether that be by way of a bigger 'loan fee' to Benfica or bigger wages for the player, or both, Hughes would not say, but the bottom line is Stoke have missed out.
"We were very close to that one," Hughes revealed. "We thought as an option for him, and for us, it made sense.
"We were bringing a young player to the Premier League who we felt would add to the quality we already have, while he would get experience being in and around the Premier League.
"We thought it would be a footballing decision, but at the end of the day it seems to have been more about the money involved."
Meanwhile, Hughes is still on the look-out for a new striker before the transfer window closes and Hannover's Senegal striker Mame Biram Diouf is high on his wanted list.
