Sunderland are expected to complete the singing of Juventus defender Paolo De Ceglie before the end of the week.
The reigning Serie A champions have given the 26-year-old permission to speak to the north-east club after coming to an agreement over the transfer fee.
Paolo Di Canio is keen to fill the left-back role with Danny Rose returning to Tottenham after a successful loan spell at the Stadium of Light last term.
De Ceglie will arrive with a wealth of experience, featuring in 115 Serie A matches while making another 16 appearances in European competitions.
The former Swindon boss has stamped his authority on the squad over summer drafting in 11 fresh faces to try and avoid being dragged into a relegation battle.
