Panathinaikos winger Charas Mavrias is close to joining Sunderland after the Black Cats agreed a £2.5m deal for the player.
The Greek teenager is close to completing a move to the Stadium of Light after talks with Panathinaikos director Nikos Dabizas reached an advanced stage.
The Greek side have dropped their original asking price, thought to have been around £6m, as they have hit financial problems and although the initial £2.5m fee would rise with add-ons linked to appearances, Sunderland look to nabbed a bargain.
Juventus and AC Milan have also been looking at the highly-rated youngster but Paolo Di Canio appears to have won the race and would like to get him signed on before the squad head off to Italy for some pre-season work.
