Sunderland have snapped up Cape Verde-born Switzerland Under-21 international midfielder Cabral from Basle.
Cabral, full name Adilson Tavares Varela, let his contract at the Swiss club run down and has joined the Black Cats on a three-year deal.
The defensive midfielder, who can also play at the back, began his career at Lausanne before joining Basle in 2007.
He has impressed for them in recent years, helping the St Jakob Park club claim a domestic double before starring in the Champions League.
Cabral played a key role in Basle's latest league title last season and also his part in Basle's run to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they were beaten by eventual winners Chelsea.
He becomes the latest new arrival at the Stadium of Light in a summer of considerable change as boss Paolo Di Canio sets about putting his own stamp on a squad that narrowly avoided relegation last season.
