Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill is still interested in Wigan's Shaun Maloney and may move for the midfielder at the end of the season.
Black Cats boss O'Neill is a big admirer of the Scot after signing him for Aston Villa and reports claim he tried to land him again during the January transfer window.
However, Latics fought off his interest and even convinced the player to pen a new deal, but that will not stop O'Neill from revisiting the situation at the end of the season, but much depends on Wigan's staying up.
If the Latics can fight off relegation again then Roberto Martinez will be in a strong position to keep hold of his player.
Sunderland are willing to pay £2.5million for the midfielder but that figure would fall short of Wigan's valuation and all talk of a move is on hold until the summer.
