Black Cats target cash deals

Sunderland will reportedly look to bring in some big-money signings having drafted in three new players on Bosman free transfers.

Black Cats boss Gus Poyet has snapped up Manchester City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, West Brom right-back Billy Jones and Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez so far this summer after the trio were due to fall out of contract at their respective clubs.

However, with more squad strengthening required to avoid a repeat of last season's battle for relegation, not to mention the departures of seven out-of-contract players and five loanees, Poyet is poised to be handed a sizeable transfer kitty to bring in more new faces.

Swansea centre-half Ashley Williams continues to be linked with a move to Wearside, despite the Black Cats seeing an initial £4million bid rejected earlier in the summer, while they hope to agree a permanent deal with Liverpool to sign striker Fabio Borini following his successful loan spell last term.

The problem is the Swans are keen to tie down Williams to a new deal, while Borini is believed to want to stay at Anfield and fight for his place despite seeing Rickie Lambert's £4million arrival from Southampton likely to see him drop further down Reds' boss Brendan Rodgers' pecking order.
