Lee Cattermole believes Connor Wickham is the man to ensure Sunderland don't find themselves battling relegation next season.
After bursting onto the scene as a teenager at Ipswich, the striker appeared to lose his way following his big money move to Wearside in 2011, failing to make himself a regular in the side.
However, after a couple of decent loan spells in the Championship, Gustavo Poyet gave him his chance towards the end of last season and he repaid the Uruguayan's faith by netting five times as the Black Cats avoided relegation.
It looks like it is going to be another busy summer at the Stadium of Light but Cattermole says a forward is one thing they will not need to buy as they look to avoid the drop as he believes that Wickham is only going to get better.
"Connor will only get better," he told the Sunderland Echo. "He came to Sunderland as a young lad and he's never really been given a chance.
"When he has been, if you don't take your chance in the first couple of games, you don't get much longer - results are that important.
"But he's shown people what he's all about now after getting experience from his loan spells and hopefully he will get better and better."
Despite their lowly positions over the last few years, Sunderland do have plenty of talent in their squad and punters who agree with Cattermole's opinion may use their free bet to back Poyet's men to finish in the top half.
