Defender issues Cats pledge

SunderlandDanny Collins has vowed to stay and fight for his place despite the arrival of Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney.

Competition for places in Sunderland's defence is now fierce following the arrival of the West Ham duo and Collins is well aware that his place in the side is in danger.

However, the Wales defender admits the competition for places is good for everyone at the Stadium of Light and says he will battle for his place in the Black Cats' rearguard.

"I relish the competition - it spurs me on," Collins revealed. "You have to fight for your place. If you just throw the towel in when new players arrive then there is no point in you being here.

"All I can do is do my best every day in training and out on the pitch, and the rest is up to the manager.

"There are six defenders competing for four shirts, so there is a lot of competition, and that's something you need in the squad if you are to do well in the Premier League."
