Boss Paolo Di Canio has dropped a big hint midfielder Lee Cattermole could be on his way out of Sunderland this summer.
Cattermole is now virtually fully fit once again after recovering from his long-term injury but his prospects of staying at the Stadium of Light appear bleak under Di Canio.
The former Middlesbrough man has been linked with a move away following several new midfield arrivals over the close season and Di Canio has done nothing to quell the speculation when asked about his future.
He told the Gazette: "He couldn't come (to Hong Kong) because he was not fully fit - in the opinion of both myself and the fitness coach.
"He is training with the reserves and then when we get back to Sunderland, he will be ready."
However, when asked if Cattermole had a future at the club, the boss said: "We will see. It depends."
The 24-year-old, who was linked with Hull City earlier this summer, was not included in Sunderland's squad for this week's Barclays Asia Trophy as he continued his rehabilitation work and is thought to be keen on trying to prove himself to Di Canio after only signing a new three-year contract at the club last October.
