Sunderland will face a battle to capture target Humberto Suazo, who is keen on a move to England, with Wigan and Birmingham also keen.

The Chile striker, who plays in Mexico for Monterrey, impressed in the World Cup and has attracted attention from around the Premier League with Birmingham and Sunderland scouts recommending him to respective bosses Steve Bruce and Alex McLeish.

However, Wigan are hoping to usurp both clubs in the race to lure him to England and are said to be preparing a £7million bid as boss Roberto Martinez searches for a replacement for Hugo Rodallega.

The 29-year-old appears to have the assets that would make him a success in the top flight but his asking price could put clubs off.

Suazo spent the second half of last season on loan at Spanish side Real Zaragoza and they remain in contention to sign him on a permanent basis ahead of the new domestic season.
